A disciplined multidisciplinarian and hopeless idea junkie, Andrew Maxfield has appreciated Mr. Berry’s work since receiving a signed copy of The Memory of Old Jack as a gift in 1997. Andrew’s creative work ranges from choral music to short film scores to songs to silly poems for serious children and serious writing for mundane purposes—and an occasional butter sculpture at the dinner table. Andrew lives with his wife Liz Davis Maxfield—a professional cellist and expert in Irish traditional folk music—and their sons Eliot and Simon in Provo, Utah, where they are attempting, with slightly more enthusiasm than talent, to restore an old home and a poor garden plot.
In addition to acting as executive producer for Celebrating Wendell Berry in Music, Andrew's contribution includes his choral compositions based on Berry's texts. These choral settings were recorded masterfully by the Salt Lake Choral Artists, under the direction of Brady R. Allred. You can hear the recordings of the choir, and of Mr. Berry reading the corresponding poems, on In Song and Shade, one of the two albums included in the award-winning boxed set.
